BBVA traces its history to Banco de Bilbao, founded on 28 May 1857 in Bilbao, in the Basque region of northern Spain, as an issuing and discount bank. Banco de Vizcaya was founded in 1901 and began operations in Bilbao. Banco de Bilbao opened a Paris branch in 1902 and a London branch in 1918, marking the start of its international presence. The two Spanish banks signed a merger agreement in 1988 and adopted the BBV brand in 1989. In 1991, Spain's government created Argentaria by grouping public banks; the entity was privatized between 1993 and 1998. BBV and Argentaria announced their merger on 19 October 1999, creating BBVA. The group later expanded through acquisitions, including nationalized Unnim Banc and Catalunya Banc in Catalonia between 2012 and 2014. In 2019, BBVA unified its worldwide brand, replacing local names in Argentina, Mexico, Peru and the United States; Turkey's Garanti Bank became Garanti BBVA. BBVA is headquartered in Bilbao, with operational offices in Madrid, where its Ciudad BBVA complex is located. Its history also includes international expansion across Latin America, the United States and Turkey, alongside a digital transformation initiative begun in 2007.
