BankBoston was a Boston-based American bank formed in 1996 through the merger of Bank of Boston and BayBank. Its history drew on many New England institutions, including the Massachusetts Bank, founded in 1784, and the First National Bank of Boston, founded in 1859 as Safety Fund Bank. The Massachusetts Bank was renamed Massachusetts National Bank in 1864; after its 1903 merger with First National, the combined institution soon became First National Bank of Boston. It adopted the name Bank of Boston in 1982 and acquired Connecticut-based Colonial Bancorp in 1985 and BankVermont Corporation in 1987. BayBank's roots included Old Colony Trust, organized in 1928. The 1996 merger created a larger institution rebranded BankBoston, headquartered in Boston, with more than $62 billion in assets at year-end. In 1999, Fleet Bank acquired BankBoston, creating FleetBoston Financial and ending BankBoston's independent run. Bank of America acquired FleetBoston in 2004, with the merger completed in 2005. Bank of America subsequently sold the former BankBoston Latin American operations. The BankBoston name ended across branches in 2007; the company article describes the remaining BankBoston as an international private bank subsidiary of Bank of America.
