Take a piece of Jacksonville and Florida banking history along on your travels. Barnett Bank began in 1877 as the Bank of Jacksonville, founded by William Boyd Barnett with $43,000 in capital. It grew from a local institution into a statewide network, linking generations of customers across Florida. The name also recalls the landmark downtown headquarters that opened in 1926 and the Barnett Center occupied in 1990. A thoughtful pick for travelers and collectors drawn to the story of a hometown bank that became part of a larger chapter in American business.
Barnett Bank began in Jacksonville, Florida, as the Bank of Jacksonville, opened by William Boyd Barnett on May 7, 1877, with $43,000 in capital. After receiving a national charter, it became the National Bank of Jacksonville; in 1903, Bion Barnett renamed it Barnett National Bank in honor of his father. The bank reopened after the Great Fire of 1901 and grew through acquisitions across Florida. Its 18-story headquarters, opened in 1926, was Jacksonville’s tallest building until 1954. By the late 20th century, Barnett had become Florida’s largest commercial bank, with more than 600 offices and $41.2 billion in deposits. A new downtown headquarters, announced in 1987 and occupied in 1990, became known as the Barnett Center. In 1997, NationsBank purchased Barnett. Less than a year later, NationsBank acquired Bank of America and adopted that name. The Barnett Historic Preservation Foundation formed in December 1997, and the bank’s collection was donated to the State Library and Archives of Florida in 2001.
