GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of a familiar Seattle name. Bartell Drugs began in 1890, when George H. Bartell Sr. bought a pharmacy on South Jackson Street, and grew into a family-run chain serving communities around Puget Sound. Generations of shoppers knew its neighborhood storefronts as the company adapted to changing retail habits. This coffee mug celebrates the local memories and Washington history behind Bartell Drugs, a regional institution whose name concluded its 135-year run in 2025.
Bartell Drugs began in 1890, when George H. Bartell Sr. bought the Lake Washington Pharmacy on South Jackson Street in Seattle. After opening another Seattle shop in 1898, he incorporated the business as the Bartell Drug Company in 1904. The family-run chain grew around the Puget Sound region, adding stores in Seattle and, in 1954, Bellevue. It adapted through changing retail conditions, shifting from full-service stores toward self-service and later introducing larger shops, round-the-clock locations, centralized pricing, and a company website. Its 1984 purchase of five stores from Shoppers Drug Mart expanded its reach, and in 1991 it opened its first store beyond the Seattle area, in Gig Harbor. By February 2019, the company had 68 stores across the region. Rite Aid agreed to buy Bartell in October 2020, completing the acquisition that December while initially retaining the Bartell name. After Rite Aid’s later financial troubles and store closures, CVS acquired 20 remaining Bartell locations in 2025 and announced they would become CVS Pharmacy stores. The final Bartell-branded stores closed that September, ending the name’s 135-year run.
