Product Details & Size Guide
Celebrate the story of Bedford Vehicles with an ornament for a collector's display or a place filled with personal memories. Introduced in 1931, Bedford became a notable British commercial vehicle name, associated with working lorries, familiar vans and transport fleets at home and abroad. The company's long history includes wartime service, postwar production and changing partnerships as the vehicle industry evolved. This ceramic ornament offers a meaningful way to remember the trucks and road scenes that made Bedford part of everyday life, and to share an interest in Britain's industrial transport heritage.
Bedford Vehicles was established in April 1931 by Vauxhall Motors to build commercial vehicles. Vauxhall had been acquired by General Motors in November 1925, and production was transferred from Hendon to Luton, where it began in 1929. Early vehicles carried the Chevrolet Bedford name before Chevrolet was dropped. Bedford grew into an international lorry brand, exporting light, medium and heavy vehicles. During the Second World War, it supplied trucks and other vehicles for military service, and production resumed in 1945. Its commercial vehicle manufacturing expanded at Dunstable, whose plant came online in 1942 and was extensively rebuilt and extended between 1955 and 1957. In 1986, the Luton van factory became part of the IBC Vehicles joint venture with Isuzu. General Motors divested Bedford’s core heavy-truck business in 1987, and it continued as AWD Trucks; the Bedford name remained on some light commercial vehicles based on Vauxhall, Opel, Isuzu and Suzuki designs. The brand was retired in May 1990. The Luton van manufacturing plant, part of Vauxhall Luton, closed in March 2025.
