GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a small piece of Peoria retail history along on your travels with this Bergner's Luggage Tag. Founded downtown in 1889, P.A. Bergner & Co. grew from a six-floor flagship with a tea room, millinery, cobbler, and Fine China department into a regional department-store group. Its story spans Illinois expansion, changing ownership, and a later shift to online retail, making this tag a thoughtful choice for travelers who enjoy the history behind familiar store names.
P.A. Bergner & Co., known as Bergner's, was founded by Peter Alan Bergner in downtown Peoria, Illinois, in 1889. Its six-floor red stone flagship featured a tea room, millinery, cobbler, and Fine China department. A second Peoria store opened at Sheridan Village in 1957; during 1961–1973, it led U.S. department stores in merchandise sold per square foot. The chain expanded across Illinois in the 1970s, acquired Springfield's Myers Brothers in 1978, and bought Boston Store and three Gimbel's locations in 1985. In 1989, it acquired Chicago-based Carson Pirie Scott, creating a five-state retail group. After filing for bankruptcy in 1991, the company emerged in 1993 as Carson Pirie Scott & Co. Proffitt's acquired it in 1998. Bon-Ton bought Bergner's and its Northern Department Store group in 2006. Bon-Ton ceased operations in 2018, closing the remaining Bergner's stores. CSG Generation acquired Bon-Ton's intellectual property that year; BrandX.com, Inc. acquired those assets in 2021, and Bergner's became an online retailer. The downtown Peoria store closed in 1986, and its building was demolished in 2000.
