$15.99
Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
A practical display stand with a story rooted in northeastern retail history, this Bob's Stores foldable mobile phone stand recalls a brand that began as Bob's Surplus in Middletown, Connecticut, in 1954. Over the decades, the company grew from one surplus shop into a regional chain known for footwear, workwear, teamwear, and casual activewear. Its final stores closed in 2024, ending a seven-decade presence. It makes a useful desk keepsake for former shoppers and collectors of local brand history.
Bob's Stores began in 1954, when Robert “Bob” Lapidus opened Bob's Surplus on Main Street in Middletown, Connecticut. After moving to a larger building in 1962, the business relocated again following a fire in 1967. It added stores in Enfield in 1975 and Hamden in 1981, and adopted the Bob's Stores name in 1985 as it broadened its range to include casual activewear. Acquired by Melville Corporation in 1990, the chain grew to 34 stores by March 1996. Melville sold it in 1997 to company management and Citicorp Venture Capital. After a 2003 bankruptcy, TJX acquired the retailer. Private equity firms Versa Capital Management and Crystal Capital bought it in 2008. Following further bankruptcy proceedings, a new holding company, Eastern Outfitters, was formed in 2016 to manage Bob's and Eastern Mountain Sports. Sports Direct International acquired both retailers in 2017; GoDigital Media Group acquired them in 2022. In June 2024, SDI Stores filed for Chapter 11 protection. Bob's announced the closure of all remaining stores in July, and the last locations closed by the end of September 2024.
