Take a piece of American rail history along on your travels with this Boston and Albany Railroad luggage tag. The route linked Boston and Albany through Worcester, Springfield, and the Berkshire Hills, growing from early Massachusetts railways into a major corridor. Its story spans commuter service, intercity journeys, and successive railroad systems. A fitting travel accessory for B&A enthusiasts, railroad-history collectors, and anyone drawn to the enduring character of classic rail routes.
The Boston and Albany Railroad connected Boston, Massachusetts, with Albany, New York, and grew from several earlier railways. The Boston and Worcester Railroad was chartered in 1831; its line reached Worcester in 1835, and season passes introduced in 1843 helped establish commuter service. The Western Railroad, chartered in 1833, connected Worcester to the state line, with its route through the Berkshires completed in 1841. New York connections included the Albany and West Stockbridge Railroad. Mergers in 1867 and 1870 brought the principal companies together as the Boston and Albany Railroad. The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad leased it in 1900, and the lease passed to the New York Central Railroad in 1914; the B&A retained its public identity. New York Central merged into Penn Central in 1968, followed by Conrail in 1976 and CSX in 1999. Today the route carries freight and passenger services, including Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited and the MBTA Framingham/Worcester Line. The MBTA acquired the line east of Framingham in 1973 and the remaining section to Worcester in 2010.
