Boston Stores (California department store) Men's Sport Polo Shirt
Product Details & Size Guide
Bring a piece of Southern California retail history into everyday wear with this Boston Stores sport polo shirt. Ira Kaufman opened the first Boston Store in Inglewood in 1934, and the business grew into a regional chain reaching California and Arizona. Its story includes the Myers Whittier and Wineman's acquisitions, a move to Carson, and a final chapter that ended with liquidation in 1996. For former shoppers and local history fans, this shirt celebrates a familiar department store name.
Boston Stores, originally and often still called The Boston Store, was a department store chain based in Inglewood, California. Ira Kaufman opened its first store in downtown Inglewood in 1934. By 1990, the chain had grown to 20 stores, with 14 in California and six in Arizona, and about 1,000 employees. Its headquarters moved to Carson in 1990. The company expanded through acquisitions: it bought Myers Whittier in 1972, initially retaining that store's name, and renamed its two Whittier stores Boston Stores in 1976. A new Myers Whittwood location had opened at Whittwood Center in 1974. In 1984, Boston Stores acquired Wineman's, whose roots included Ventura and Oxnard and whose Huntington Park store had been a Pacific Boulevard anchor since 1924. Several Wineman's branches became Boston Stores. Boston Stores also bought Moore's Department Store in Lompoc in 1990. Debt associated with a 1984 leveraged buyout, acquisitions and new systems weighed on the chain. It sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1992; some locations closed, and the remaining stores were liquidated in 1996.
