Bradlees Department Store, commonly called Bradlees, was a discount department store chain based in Braintree, Massachusetts, and operating mainly in the Northeastern United States. Its name came from Bradley International Airport in Connecticut, where the founders held early planning meetings. The first store opened in New London, Connecticut, on March 14, 1958. Grocery chain Stop & Shop acquired Bradlees in 1961 and owned it until 1992. Some shopping plazas paired the two chains, including shared-roof stores that let customers move between them. After Stop & Shop sold Bradlees to an investment group in 1992, the chain operated independently. Bradlees filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 1995, closed some stores, and emerged in February 1999. It also acquired several former Caldor locations after that competitor closed. On December 26, 2000, Bradlees announced a Chapter 7 filing and liquidation. Its final store closed on March 15, 2001. At liquidation, the company had 105 stores in seven states and 10,000 employees. Former locations later housed a range of other retailers.
