GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of Brandeis, the Omaha retailer whose story began with a single store in 1881. The company’s eight-story downtown flagship opened in 1906 and became a prominent local landmark, while later shopping-center growth carried the name to more communities. Brandeis also acquired Lincoln’s Gold and Company in 1964, adding another chapter to Nebraska shopping history. This coffee mug makes a meaningful keepsake for former customers, local history enthusiasts, and collectors of regional department-store memorabilia.
J.L. Brandeis & Sons, commonly known as Brandeis, was a department-store chain based in the Omaha, Nebraska, area. Jonas L. Brandeis began the business in 1881 with The Fair, a store at 506 South 13th Street. In 1888, he opened the Boston Store at 16th and Douglas. Work on a larger downtown flagship began in 1905, and the eight-story building opened in 1906. Designed by John Latenser Sr., it became a prominent retail landmark. Brandeis expanded beyond downtown through shopping centers, developing Crossroads Shopping Center in Omaha in 1959 and opening Southroads Mall in 1966. In 1964, the company acquired Gold and Company, a Lincoln department store that continued under its own name as a Brandeis division until it closed in 1981. Brandeis reached about fifteen stores and peaked in the early 1970s, with 3,000 employees and $100 million in sales. The downtown Omaha flagship closed in 1980. In 1987, Des Moines-based Younkers purchased the chain for $33.9 million, kept eleven stores, and converted them to the Younkers name.
