Brantano Footwear was a European chain selling shoes for men, women and children, founded in Belgium. Its roots trace to a small factory in Lede, East Flanders, run by André Brantegem and his brother, sons of a cobbler who specialised in ladies’ shoes for Belgian wholesalers and retailers. After the brothers separated, André opened a retail outlet at the factory in 1962; it grew into the Brantano shoe-shop chain. The company closed its Dutch and Danish stores in 2005 and later liquidated its French stores. Dutch holding company Macintosh Retail Group took ownership in 2007. In 2015, Macintosh sold the Brantano UK subsidiary to Alteri Investors, and in 2018 sold Brantano to FNG N.V. Brantano entered administration in March 2017, and its stores closed in June, with more than 900 jobs lost. FNG N.V. filed for bankruptcy on 30 July 2020. Following an unsuccessful attempt to relaunch brands including Brantano, it filed for bankruptcy again in February 2022 and subsequently liquidated its assets. Brantano subsidiaries included Brantano Luxembourg SA, Brimmo NV and Muys NV.
