It brings the company’s distinctive showroom-era story to a kitchen, office or display space.
Brendle's was a chain of catalog showrooms based in Elkin, North Carolina. Its business began in 1918 as SW&Y Supply, a wholesale grocery-distributing company. In 1953, Douglas D. Brendle, the founder's grandson, joined the business and began adding toys and housewares, converting the Elkin warehouse into its first wholesale showroom. The company published its first catalog in 1957. Its showrooms later carried jewelry, toys, sporting goods and electronics. At its peak in 1990, Brendle's operated 58 showrooms across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Tennessee and had 3,000 employees. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1992 and closed six stores. Douglas Brendle retired in 1995. The company filed for Chapter 11 again in April 1996, then reduced its chain to 12 stores and tried to refocus on home goods, crafts and party items while dropping electronics, toys and sporting goods. The strategy did not take hold in time, and Brendle's decided to go out of business in December 1996.
