Remember Bristol Siddeley Engines Limited with a keepsake inspired by its place in British engineering history. The company was formed on 1 April 1959 when Bristol Aero-Engines and Armstrong Siddeley Motors merged, joining two established engine-making businesses. At its Patchway works, Bristol Siddeley made engines including the Olympus, Orpheus, Pegasus, Proteus and Viper. This square porcelain fridge magnet suits aviation enthusiasts and collectors who enjoy a compact reminder of the company's distinctive story, from its merger to its purchase by Rolls-Royce in 1966.
Bristol Siddeley Engines Limited (BSEL) was a British aero-engine manufacturer formed through the full merger of Bristol Aero-Engines and Armstrong Siddeley Motors on 1 April 1959. The two businesses had been the engine-making arms of the Bristol Aeroplane Company and the Hawker Siddeley Group, which held BSEL's shares equally. A pilot company had been established on 6 May 1958 to prepare the alliance. Bristol Aero-Engines traced its origins to 1920, when the Bristol Aeroplane Company took over Cosmos Engineering's assets; Armstrong Siddeley Motors began in 1919 through a merger of Siddeley-Deasy and Armstrong Whitworth. In November 1961, BSEL acquired the de Havilland Engine Company and Blackburn Engines. Its Patchway factory in South Gloucestershire made engines including the Olympus, Orpheus, Pegasus, Proteus and Viper. The company also produced licensed diesel engines and had interests in motor cars. It bought out its car production activities, ending Armstrong Siddeley car production in 1960 and selling Bristol Cars that September. Rolls-Royce Limited purchased BSEL in 1966; Bristol Siddeley kept its identity and marketing organization, and remained a listed, dormant company within the Rolls-Royce group.
