GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a reminder of eastern North Carolina’s shopping history along on your travels with this Luggage Tag honoring Brody Brothers Dry Goods. Founded in Kinston in 1928, the family business expanded into a six-store mall chain serving communities across the region. Its later acquisition and store transitions give collectors a window into the changing world of regional department stores. This keepsake is a fitting choice for former Brody’s shoppers, local-history fans, and anyone who enjoys carrying a story of family-run retail into new places.
Brody Brothers Dry Goods Company, Inc., commonly known as Brody's, grew from a family shoe business into an upscale fashion merchandise chain serving eastern North Carolina. Hyman J. Brody began the business in Sumter, South Carolina, in the early 20th century. In 1928, his son Leo moved to Kinston, North Carolina, and founded Brody Brothers Dry Goods. Leo and six of his brothers expanded the retail operation, which acquired Cohen & Sons Clothing in 1973. By the time Proffitt's acquired Brody's in 1998, the chain had six stores in six eastern North Carolina malls, with a combined 275,000 square feet of retail space. Locations included Greenville, Rocky Mount, Kinston, Goldsboro, and New Bern. The Kinston store later became Proffitt's. In 2005, Belk acquired the Greenville, Rocky Mount, Kinston, and Goldsboro stores when Saks sold Proffitt's to Belk. The Rocky Mount location did not become a Belk because Golden East already had one; it instead became Bed Bath & Beyond and Ross Dress for Less. Brody's was formerly headquartered in Greenville.
