The Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation emerged in 1923 and operated a broad network of subway, elevated, streetcar, and bus services. After the City acquired its operations in 1940, former BMT routes became part of the integrated subway. A useful desk companion for route researchers, transit enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys a daily reminder of the city’s evolving railway story.
The Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) was a New York City transit holding company incorporated in 1923. It took over the assets of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company on June 15, 1923, after that predecessor went bankrupt. Through subsidiaries, including the New York Rapid Transit Corporation, the BMT operated subway, elevated, streetcar, and bus services, chiefly in Brooklyn, with routes extending into Queens and Manhattan. The City acquired all BMT transit operations on June 1, 1940, following pressure from Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia's administration and the City's rights under the Dual Contracts. The BMT's former lines later became part of the integrated New York City Subway. Connections built from the 1950s onward linked former BMT routes with the city-built IND network, including the 60th Street Tunnel Connection, opened in 1955, and the Chrystie Street Connection, opened in 1967. Today, BMT routes and infrastructure form part of the subway's B Division; former BMT services are represented by routes including J, Z, L, M, N, Q, R, and W, along with the Franklin Avenue Shuttle.
