Bring railroad heritage to your next gathering with a nod to the Buffalo and Susquehanna. What began as logging lines in Pennsylvania grew into a route linking communities from Keating Summit and Galeton toward Buffalo and Sagamore. As the region changed, the railroad’s business moved from lumber toward coal and coke, before its operations passed into a larger system. This can cooler makes a conversation-starting addition for railroad enthusiasts, local history fans, and collectors who appreciate the stories behind the names on the map.
The Buffalo and Susquehanna Railroad grew from logging lines organized by Buffalo lumber and fuel dealer Frank H. Goodyear. Beginning with the Sinnemahoning Valley Railroad, opened as a common carrier in 1885, Goodyear’s network expanded through north-central Pennsylvania. In 1893, several smaller railroads were consolidated into the Buffalo and Susquehanna Railroad. Its routes linked Keating Summit, Austin, Costello, Galeton, Ansonia, Wellsville, and other communities, carrying lumber, coal, and passengers. Extensions reached Buffalo by 1906 and Sagamore, Pennsylvania, by 1905; at its peak, the system ran about 250 miles between Buffalo and Sagamore and had more than 400 miles of track. The company’s business shifted from lumber toward coal and coke as its network expanded. In 1929, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad bought a majority of its capital stock, and took over operations in 1932. The railroad and its remaining subsidiaries were formally merged into that system in 1954. In 1956, the remaining 97 miles of former Buffalo and Susquehanna track were sold to the H. E. Salzberg Company, which organized the Wellsville, Addison and Galeton Railroad to operate the line. The line was abandoned in 1979.
