The company began operations in 1970 through the joining of four established railroads, then grew through later acquisitions and routes across the West. Its Powder River Basin line, built in 1972, became part of a major change in coal traffic from Wyoming. The BN era ended with the 1996 merger that formed its successor, making this pullover a fitting layer for railroad fans and history-minded travelers.

Burlington Northern Railroad, reporting mark BN, began operating on March 2, 1970, after four railroads were brought together: Great Northern Railway, Northern Pacific Railway, Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Their histories were closely connected through shared ownership and earlier merger efforts. The line’s ancestry reaches back to the 1848 chartering of the Chicago and Aurora Railroad, an ancestor of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy. Burlington Northern expanded its reach through later acquisitions, including the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway in 1980, and the absorption of Colorado and Southern Railway in 1981 and Fort Worth and Denver Railway in 1982. Its headquarters moved from Saint Paul to Seattle in 1981, then to Fort Worth in 1988. In 1996, Burlington Northern joined with Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway; the merger took effect on December 31, forming Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway. The successor was renamed BNSF Railway in 2005. Burlington Northern’s Powder River Basin route, built in 1972, helped carry a major increase in coal traffic from Wyoming.
