Their histories were closely connected through shared ownership and earlier merger efforts. The line’s ancestry reaches back to the 1848 chartering of the Chicago and Aurora Railroad, an ancestor of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy. Burlington Northern expanded its reach through later acquisitions, including the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway in 1980, and the absorption of Colorado and Southern Railway in 1981 and Fort Worth and Denver Railway in 1982.
