Cahokia Downs Horse Racetrack Unisex Quarter Zip Pullover
Product Details & Size Guide
Show your appreciation for Illinois racing history in a Cahokia Downs quarter zip pullover. The track opened in 1954 near Alorton, where it hosted both harness and Thoroughbred racing on its three-quarter-mile oval. Its best-known racecard took place on October 18, 1978, when David Gall became the first jockey in United States Thoroughbred racing to win eight races in one day. A considered choice for track-history collectors and fans who value the stories behind regional racing venues.
Cahokia Downs was a horse racing track on Highway 15 near Alorton in St. Clair County, Illinois. Operated by the East St. Louis Jockey Club, it opened in 1954 and held both Standardbred harness races and Thoroughbred flat races. Its oval measured three-quarters of a mile and had sandy clay soil. Chutes allowed five-furlong races around one turn and races of about eleven-sixteenths of a mile around three turns. The distance from the final turn to the finish was 500 feet, and both straightaways were 80 feet wide. On October 18, 1978, jockey David Gall became the first rider in United States Thoroughbred racing to win eight races on one racecard, accomplishing the feat at Cahokia Downs. In October 1979, the Illinois Racing Commission declined to authorize racing dates for the track in 1980. The business filed for bankruptcy on April 2, 1980, and the facility never reopened. The track’s history therefore spans its 1954 opening, a nationally notable racecard achievement, and its closure following the loss of authorization and bankruptcy.
