The company consolidated with several railroads in 1870, including the Western Pacific Railroad and the San Francisco and Oakland Railroad. It was leased to the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1885, reorganized as the Central Pacific Railway in 1899, and formally merged into Southern Pacific in 1959. Southern Pacific was acquired by Union Pacific in 1996, which came to control the original right-of-way.
