Carry a connection to railway history on your next journey with this Central Vermont Railway passport cover. The company’s roots reach back to an 1843 charter, followed by a line to Burlington in 1849 and routes connecting Vermont with neighboring states and Montreal. Central Vermont later became part of the Canadian National system while retaining a distinct identity, a fitting story for a travel accessory. Made for rail enthusiasts, Vermont history collectors, and admirers of cross-border transportation heritage.
The railway’s origins date to the Vermont Central Railroad, chartered on October 31, 1843, to connect Burlington with Windsor across Vermont. Construction began in 1845, and the route reached Burlington in 1849. The Vermont and Canada Railroad, chartered in 1845, extended the system north toward the Canadian border and was later consolidated with the Vermont Central. In 1872, the company adopted the name Central Vermont Railroad. Its network grew through leases and connections with regional railways, including routes toward Ogdensburg, New York, and New London, Connecticut. After entering receivership in 1896, it was bought by the Grand Trunk Railway; a reorganized Central Vermont Railway emerged in 1899. The Grand Trunk system became part of Canadian National Railway in 1923. Although no longer independent, Central Vermont retained a separate identity within the CN network. Following another reorganization in 1930, the railway carried freight and operated passenger services, including the Montrealer. On February 3, 1995, CN sold its main line from New London to East Alburg, Vermont, to RailTex. The operation took the name New England Central Railroad; RailTex later became part of RailAmerica, acquired by Genesee & Wyoming in 2012.
