In January 1992, the corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. As part of its reorganization, four stores closed. Under pressure from creditors, chairman Charles A. Chappell Jr., a grandson of the founder, sold the company and its remaining six stores to Bon-Ton Stores in October 1994. The sale marked the end of Chappell's as an independent family-owned chain and its transition to new ownership.
