Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Checker Motors Corporation began in 1922 as a manufacturer focused on taxis built for real fleet work. Its move to Kalamazoo and the long run of its A-series cabs made Checker an enduring part of American automotive and taxi history. This ceramic coffee mug celebrates that story as part of a daily coffee break, whether you remember seeing Checker cabs on city streets or enjoy learning about the companies that shaped them. A thoughtful choice for collectors and car-history fans.
Checker Motors Corporation began in 1922 as the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company, formed by Morris Markin through the merger of Commonwealth Motors and Markin Automobile Body. First based in Chicago, the manufacturer moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1923, taking over factories formerly used by Dort Motor Car Company and Handley-Knight. Checker concentrated on purpose-built taxicabs, whose roomy interiors and durable construction suited heavy fleet use. Markin also acquired taxi operators, helping create a market for Checker cabs. In 1958, the company adopted the name Checker Motors Corporation. Its A-series taxis and related passenger cars remained in production until 1982, when vehicle manufacturing ended. Checker then focused on automotive subcontracting, supplying parts and stampings to companies including General Motors and Chrysler. After declining customer sales and other financial pressures, the Kalamazoo company filed for Chapter 11 protection on January 16, 2009. Its manufacturing business and equipment were sold to Canadian suppliers that June, and the company officially went out of business on January 14, 2010. Remaining bankruptcy-estate assets were acquired by Oak Point Partners in 2018.
