Take the Chicago and Alton Railroad story along on your daily travels. From its 1847 charter and first completed route in 1852 to service linking Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City, the company’s history follows the growth and reshaping of regional rail. Its 1947 merger marked another turn in a long story that collectors continue to explore. This travel mug celebrates the routes, names, and railroad heritage behind a line whose legacy remains part of the modern rail network.
The Alton Railroad was the final name of a railway linking Chicago with Alton, Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri, and Kansas City, Missouri. Its earliest ancestor, the Alton and Sangamon Railroad, was chartered in Illinois on February 27, 1847, to connect Alton with Springfield. The line was completed in 1852, and its first locomotive trip ran from Alton to Springfield on September 9 that year. Extensions reached Bloomington in 1854 and Joliet in 1855; a leased Joliet and Chicago route then provided continuous rail service to Chicago. Reorganizations led to the St. Louis, Alton and Chicago Railroad around 1857 and the Chicago and Alton Railroad in 1862. Bloomington became the company’s headquarters and main repair center. The Chicago and Alton was purchased by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1931; in 1942, the Alton was released to the courts. The Alton Railroad merged into the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad on May 31, 1947. Later successor lines included the Illinois Central Gulf and Chicago, Missouri and Western. Today, the former Chicago–St. Louis route is part of Union Pacific, while the Kansas City line is part of the CPKC system.
