Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad Ceramic Ornament
Product Details & Size Guide
Remember the North Shore Line with an ornament honoring its place in Chicago–Milwaukee transportation history. The electric railway began with streetcar service in Waukegan in 1895, grew to reach Milwaukee, and later connected directly to Chicago’s Loop. Its Skokie Valley route and streamlined Electroliners helped define a remarkable era of regional travel. Although rail service ended in 1963, the railroad remains a favorite subject for interurban and transit collectors. This ornament makes a meaningful seasonal keepsake for railway enthusiasts and anyone who treasures the history of the North Shore communities.
The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad, known as the North Shore Line, grew from the Bluff City Electric Street Railway, which began operating in Waukegan in May 1895. The Chicago and Milwaukee Electric Railroad acquired it in May 1898, and through service reached Evanston in 1899. The line extended north to Milwaukee by 1908. After the North Shore Line took over operations in 1916, it gained direct access to Chicago’s elevated railway and the Loop in 1919. Its Skokie Valley route opened in 1926, creating a faster Chicago–Milwaukee path and local service to Mundelein. The railroad developed streamlined Electroliner trains, introduced in 1941, and operated passenger, freight, streetcar, bus and motor-coach services. A new corporation assumed the property in 1946 after reorganization. Passenger service on the Shore Line ended in 1955; all rail service ended in January 1963. The Electroliners were sold to a Philadelphia-area transit company and later ran under the name Liberty Liners. Since 1964, Chicago Transit Authority rapid transit has used part of the former route between Chicago and Skokie.
