Founded by Walter Chrysler on June 6, 1925, the Chrysler Corporation grew from the reorganization of the Maxwell Motor Company. Its early headquarters were in Highland Park, Michigan; the company moved to Auburn Hills in 1996. Chrysler expanded its vehicle range with Plymouth and DeSoto in 1928, acquired Dodge Brothers, and later brought Jeep into its portfolio through the 1987 acquisition of American Motors Corporation. After controlling French, British, and Spanish automakers, Chrysler sold its European operation to PSA Peugeot Citroën in 1978. A 1998 merger with Daimler-Benz created DaimlerChrysler; Chrysler was sold to Cerberus Capital Management in 2007 and became Chrysler LLC. Following a Chapter 11 reorganization in 2009, it operated as Chrysler Group LLC. Fiat acquired the remaining shares in 2014, and the company became FCA US LLC that December. In 2021, the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group formed Stellantis, making FCA US a subsidiary. The Chrysler nameplate remains among the vehicle brands sold by Stellantis North America.
