The Colburn Automobile Company was a Brass Era manufacturer based in Denver, Colorado, producing cars from 1906 to 1911 at a factory near 15th Street and Colfax Avenue. Herbert C. Colburn and Ernest A. Colburn Jr. designed and built the automobiles, with financial backing from their father, Judge Ernest A. Colburn, a mine owner whose fortune came from the Cripple Creek mining district. The brothers had engineering and technology interests and held at least two patents for mining machinery design. Colburn cars were first built as roadsters and later included the Model 35 touring car. Styled after French Renault cars, they placed the radiator behind the sloping hood. Model 30 and Model 40 roadsters were described as fast, with a top speed of 72 miles per hour, and competed in road races and track events around Denver. A roadster featured a four-cylinder, 40-horsepower engine and four-speed transmission and sold for $4,500. A prominent brass letter C marked the front of the automobiles. The brothers also ran the Ajax Mine in Victor, one of their father's mines.
