Product Details & Size Guide
Keep notes alongside a story of invention with this Cole Motor Car Company spiral notebook. Joseph J. Cole's path began with a car-building attempt in 1903 and a carriage company purchase in 1904; automobile production followed in Indianapolis in 1908. Cole went on to offer six-cylinder cars and introduce a V-8-powered model in 1915. From early experimentation to liquidation in 1925, the company's history offers inspiration for automotive enthusiasts, researchers, and anyone who appreciates independent enterprise.
The Cole Motor Car Company was an early automobile maker based in Indianapolis, Indiana, building cars from 1908 through 1925. Joseph J. Cole first tried to develop a car in Rockford, Illinois, in 1903. In 1904 he bought the Gates-Osborne Carriage Company, renamed it the Cole Carriage Company, and began producing a high-wheeled motor buggy marketed as the Cole Solid Tire Automobile. The carriage business was reorganized as the Cole Motor Car Company in June 1909. Early models included four-cylinder cars and, from 1913, six-cylinder models. In 1915 Cole introduced its V-8-powered Model 8-50; after 1916, the company focused on V-8 cars, later marketed as the Aero-Eight. Cole declined a proposed takeover that would have made it a General Motors subsidiary. Sales fell after new production facilities opened in 1922, and Joseph Cole chose to liquidate the company. He died on August 8, 1925, before liquidation was complete. The factory produced 607 cars that year. The former Indianapolis factory building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
