GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Add an industrial-history note to your travels with this Continental Motors Corporation passport cover. Founded in Chicago in 1902, the company grew into an engine supplier whose reach extended from automobiles to tractors, trucks, pumps, and generators. Its story also includes a short-lived automobile chapter, from Continental-De Vaux cars to the Ace, Flyer, and Beacon models. For travelers with a love of American manufacturing and motoring history, this design recalls a company whose engines connected many kinds of transportation and work.
Founded in Chicago in 1902 by engineer Ross W. Judson and businessman Arthur W. Tobin, the business was first incorporated as Autocar Equipment Co. Judson designed its first commercial engine, an L-head four-cylinder, shown at the 1903 Chicago Automobile Show. In 1904, the founders shifted the focus from vehicles to engines; the company adopted the name Continental Motor and Manufacturing Co. in February 1905 and opened a major plant in Muskegon, Michigan, later expanding to Detroit. From 1905 through the 1960s, Continental supplied engines for automobiles, tractors, trucks, pumps, generators, and industrial machinery. At its 1910s and 1920s peak, it served nearly 100 automobile marques and powered an estimated three million cars. It briefly built cars as Continental Automobile Company: after taking over De Vaux-Hall assembly in 1932, it sold Continental-De Vaux cars, then introduced its own Ace, Flyer, and Beacon models for 1933; automobile assembly ended in 1934. A subsidiary, Continental Aircraft Engine Company, was formed in 1929. Ryan Aeronautical became the majority shareholder in 1965; Teledyne acquired Ryan in 1969, bringing the businesses together as Teledyne Continental Motors.
