Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad Metal Bottle Opener
Product Details & Size Guide
Celebrate a hard-won chapter of rail history with this Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad metal bottle opener. DM&E began operations in 1986 after local efforts helped protect lines from abandonment, connecting communities across South Dakota and Minnesota. Its growth through later branch acquisitions and the addition of IC&E in 2002 gives collectors plenty to remember. A practical keepsake for railroad enthusiasts, this piece recalls the blue-and-yellow identity and changing fortunes of a distinctive Northern Plains freight carrier.
The Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad (DM&E) began operations on September 5, 1986, over former Chicago and North Western lines in South Dakota and Minnesota. Its creation followed a 1983 effort to prevent abandonment of track between Pierre and Rapid City, South Dakota; an agreement announced April 24, 1986, established the new railroad, with equipment and buildings included in the purchase. In 1995, DM&E added former Chicago and North Western branches reaching Colony, Wyoming, and Crawford, Nebraska. It acquired the assets of I&M Rail Link in 2002 and renamed that operation the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad (IC&E), joining the two railroads under Cedar American Rail Holdings. Canadian Pacific announced its purchase of DM&E and affiliated companies in September 2007. After regulatory approval on September 30, 2008, Canadian Pacific assumed control on October 30. In 2014, track west of Tracy, Minnesota, was sold to Genesee & Wyoming and became the Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad. The former DM&E connected communities across the Northern Plains and served agricultural, industrial, and other freight traffic.
