Sears spun off the company in 1993, when it took the name Dean Witter, Discover & Co.; its headquarters were in New York City's World Trade Center. In 1997, it merged with Morgan Stanley to form Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Discover Co. The combined company dropped “Discover Co.” from its name in 1998 and “Dean Witter” in 2001. In 2009, Dean Witter's retail operations were transferred to Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, a joint venture with Citigroup.
