Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
A Deb Shops Hoodie / Sweatshirt celebrates a familiar apparel name shaped by decades of change in American shopping. The company began in Philadelphia in 1932 as JOY Hosiery, then expanded into regional locations before embracing mall stores and women's and girls' clothing. Its story continued through corporate changes, store closures in 2015, and a later online-only return. For former customers and collectors, this piece recalls the mall culture and specialty retail experience that made Deb Shops a recognizable part of everyday fashion history.
Deb Shops began in Philadelphia in 1932, when founders Philip Rounick and Aaron Weiner opened a store called JOY Hosiery. It sold reasonably priced hosiery, lingerie, and foundations; nylon stockings joined its inventory in 1939. The business expanded around Philadelphia in the 1950s, as the founders' sons Marvin Rounick and Warren Weiner joined management in 1961 and 1965. Responding to suburban growth and shopping-mall construction, the company shifted from neighborhood shops to larger mall stores during the 1970s and adopted the Deb Shops name, focusing on women's and girls' clothing. In 1995 it acquired Atlantic Book Stores, operating book outlets and warehouses alongside its apparel business. Deb Shops traded on NASDAQ as DEBS until Lee Equity Partners acquired it in 2007 for $395 million. Parent company DSI Holdings filed for bankruptcy in 2011 and again in 2014. In January 2015, Deb Shops announced the closure of all 295 stores; final sales took place March 30. By September 2015, the business had returned as an online-only retailer focused on plus-size clothing. Its website shut down in December 2018. A separate company later published a plus-size online store using the Deb Shops name.
