Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Add a small reminder of railroad history to your home with a magnet inspired by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. Incorporated in 1853, the company grew from Pennsylvania coal lines into a network joining Scranton, Buffalo and Hoboken. Its celebrated terminals and Cut-Off routes reflect a period of bold expansion, while its 1960 merger with the Erie Railroad marked a turning point. This keepsake is a fitting addition to a railfan collection or a simple way to remember the places connected by the Lackawanna.
Incorporated in Pennsylvania on March 11, 1853, through the consolidation of the Lackawanna and Western Railroad and the Delaware and Cobb’s Gap Railroad, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad grew from earlier lines serving Scranton and northeastern Pennsylvania. Its original purpose was to carry anthracite coal to major markets in New York City. The railroad expanded east to Hoboken, New Jersey, with connections to New York City by ferry, and west to Buffalo, New York, eventually operating a 395-mile route. Major developments included the Morris and Essex Railroad acquisition in 1868, the opening of the New York, Lackawanna and Western line to Buffalo in 1882, and new terminals in Hoboken, Scranton and Buffalo. The Lackawanna Cut-Off opened in New Jersey in 1911, followed by the Summit-Hallstead Cut-Off in Pennsylvania, built from 1912 to 1915. Declining coal traffic and competition from trucks weakened the railroad. On October 17, 1960, it merged with the Erie Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Conrail took over the successor on April 1, 1976. Later operators and owners of former routes include NJ Transit, Norfolk Southern, Delaware and Hudson, and regional rail operators.
