Delchamps was a supermarket chain headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, serving the central Gulf Coast. Alfred Frederick Delchamps and his brother Oliver founded it in November 1921 at Lawrence and Canal streets in Mobile. The company opened its first supermarket in 1928 at St. Louis Street and Washington Avenue, then expanded beyond Alabama with a Pensacola, Florida, store in 1931. Its 1937 acquisition of Coleman Grocery Company made it Mobile’s largest grocery chain, with ten stores. Delchamps incorporated in 1946 and joined the cooperative purchasing association Topco in 1964. For its 50th anniversary in 1971, it introduced a new logotype and corporate identity. In 1985, it launched a 24-hour Super Store format featuring a bakery, delicatessen, and salad bar. In 1997, Jackson, Mississippi-based Jitney Jungle bought Delchamps for $213.6 million. At the time, Delchamps had 118 supermarkets across Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. The combined chains entered bankruptcy in 1999. In 2000, stores went to Winn-Dixie and Bruno’s, among other outcomes; some became Jitney Jungle locations, and at least one later reopened as a Publix. Delchamps stores closed by the early 2000s.
