Denholm & McKay Co. was a department store in Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1870 by William Alexander Denholm. Denholm bought Finley, Lawson, & Kennedy’s dry-goods business at Main and Mechanic streets and partnered with William C. McKay. By 1882, the business had grown into a major retailer and moved into a purpose-built store. Known locally as Denholm’s and the Boston Store, it became a leading department store in Central Massachusetts. In 1954, its Victorian-style facade was replaced with a modern design. The store added a High Street annex entrance and parking in 1961, then incorporated the former downtown YWCA building on Chatham Street in 1963. That year it also installed Worcester’s first escalator. In 1969, Providence’s Gladdings Department Store merged with Denholm & McKay. Denholm’s opened a branch at Auburn Mall in 1970. Competition from the Worcester Center Galleria, which opened in 1971, contributed to the decline of the downtown store; both locations closed in 1973 following bankruptcy. The Worcester building became office space and retained the Denholm name. In 2023, it was sold to the Menkiti Group, which planned redevelopment with housing.
