Detroit and Mackinac Railway Youth Hoodie / Sweatshirt
Product Details & Size Guide
Give young railway fans a wearable connection to Michigan history with this Detroit and Mackinac Railway youth hoodie. The Turtle Line served northeastern Michigan for nearly a century, expanding from Alpena toward Cheboygan as timber traffic supported growth. The company later became the first all-diesel-haul railroad in the United States, in 1946. Its story suits train enthusiasts, students exploring local history, and families visiting preserved railway artifacts or former depots across the region.
The Detroit and Mackinac Railway served northeastern Michigan’s Lower Peninsula from 1894 to 1992, with its main offices and shops in Tawas City and a main line running from Bay City north to Cheboygan. Its predecessor, the Detroit, Bay City & Alpena Railroad, began as a narrow-gauge line between Bay City and Alpena. The route was converted to standard gauge in 1886, and the company was reorganized as the Detroit and Mackinac on December 17, 1894. During the late 1890s and early 1900s, it extended north from Alpena to Cheboygan as timber traffic supported growth. Branches served forest areas and the limestone quarries at Rogers City. In 1946, the railway became the first all-diesel-haul railroad in the United States; by 1948, it had eliminated steam locomotives. Passenger service, including trains connecting with Detroit-bound coaches, ended by 1951. In March 1976, the company acquired trackage and operating rights that provided an alternate route through Gaylord and Cheboygan to Mackinaw City. The railroad was sold to Lake State Railway in 1992, ending its independent operation. Its “Turtle Line” identity and the “Mackinac Mac” logo remain part of its recorded history.
