Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep the story of a distinctive regional freight line close at hand with this Detroit and Toledo Shore Line Railroad Square Porcelain Fridge Magnet. The Shore Line opened its Detroit-to-Toledo route for freight in 1903, following its formation from two companies incorporated in 1898. First envisioned as an electric interurban link, it became a valued part of Great Lakes rail history. Its eventual 1981 merger into Grand Trunk Western and the surviving route name make this a thoughtful keepsake for railfans and local history collectors.
The Detroit and Toledo Shore Line Railroad grew from two companies: the Toledo and Ottawa Beach Railway, incorporated in Ohio in January 1898, and Michigan’s Pleasant Bay Railway, incorporated in March 1898. Pleasant Bay purchased the Ohio company in March 1899, and the combined enterprise took the Detroit and Toledo Shore Line name the following month. Conceived as an electric interurban link, it became a freight railroad instead. The line between Detroit, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio, opened for freight traffic in September 1903. Grand Trunk Western and the Toledo, St. Louis and Western Railroad jointly owned it from 1902; the latter’s interest passed to its successor, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, in 1923. That interest later passed to Norfolk and Western in 1964. The Shore Line introduced diesel locomotives in 1950, and its final steam locomotive ran in 1952. Grand Trunk Western bought Norfolk and Western’s interest in 1981, when the Shore Line was dissolved and merged into Grand Trunk Western. Much of the former main line continues as the CN/GTW Shore Line Subdivision.
