Its 189-mile line ran from Detroit to Grand Haven on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore, with a Grand Rapids station at Plainfield and East Leonard. The Grand Trunk Railway of Canada acquired Great Western in 1882, bringing the railway under its ownership, though formal consolidation waited until 1928. That year, the company became part of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, marking its transition from a separately named regional railway into a larger railroad system.
