Diamond's began in Phoenix in 1897 as The Boston Store, founded by brothers Nathan and Isaac Diamond. The brothers had started a dry-goods business called The New York Store in El Paso in 1891, then moved to Arizona after hearing of its commercial potential. Their Phoenix store stood on Washington Street in Downtown Phoenix. By 1941, family members Nathan's sons Harold and Bert, and Isaac's son Herbert, helped manage the business. The store adopted the Diamond's name in 1947 for its 50th anniversary. Harold and Ralph Diamond later took over ownership. Portland-based Roberts Brothers bought the chain in 1957, the year it opened its first branch at Park Central Mall; the original Washington Street building later closed. Diamond's considered Tucson expansion in 1962 and entered that market in 1974. Dayton Corporation of Minneapolis bought the company in 1968. In 1970, Diamond's acquired Las Vegas retailer Ronzone's and converted its Boulevard Mall store. In January 1984, it closed its Tri-City Mall location in Mesa because of its proximity to the newer Fiesta Mall. By September, the chain had grown to twelve stores across the Southwest. Dayton-Hudson Corporation sold Diamond's to Dillard's, ending the chain's independent operation.
