It began trading on Nasdaq as DRIV on August 11, 1998; in 2013, it reported processing more than US$30 billion in online transactions. Its acquisitions included Simtel in 1999, Orbit Commerce and RegSoft.com in 2001, CCNow and Freemerchant.com in 2002, and SWReg in 2005, along with later purchases such as eSellerate, THINK Subscription, Journey Education Marketing and Fatfoogoo. CCNow was sold in 2012. After reporting multiple quarters of losses, Ronning stepped down as CEO in November 2012, and Dave Dobson was named CEO in February 2013. Siris Capital acquired Digital River for $840 million in late 2014; the deal was completed in 2015, and the company was delisted from Nasdaq after February 13. Leadership later included Adam Coyle, Christopher Bernander, Vic Pacor and Barry Kasoff. In January 2025, Digital River began shutting down, citing insolvency, and said its Minnesota employees would be laid off and its German subsidiaries closed. It filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in May 2025.
