Dinky Toys began with Meccano’s miniature railway accessories and grew into a much-loved range of cars, trucks, aircraft and other vehicles. Its name appeared in 1934, followed by the Dinky Toys marque in 1935. New models returned after the wartime pause, and the range continued to develop through changing decades. Dinky Toys was a die-cast vehicle and miniature accessories brand produced by British toy company Meccano Ltd. Frank Hornby founded Meccano in 1908; its railway accessories first appeared in 1933, and the name Meccano Dinky Toys was used in Meccano Magazine in April 1934. The Meccano name was dropped from the marque in August 1935. Production took place at the Binns Road factory in Liverpool, with a French range produced first at Bobigny and later at Calais. British production stopped during the Second World War, when the Liverpool factory made goods for the war effort; new models returned in 1946. The post-war range expanded from cars to commercial, military and other vehicles, including larger Dinky Supertoys introduced in 1947. Lines Brothers took over Meccano in 1964, and Dinky Supertoys was renamed Dinky Toys in 1965. Meccano was later bought by Airfix, and the aircraft range included larger models developed by Airfix and made by Meccano. French production ended in 1972. British-made Dinky Toys continued until 1979, concluding a brand history shaped by changing owners, factories and product ranges.
