GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep a favorite piece of Chicago-area grocery history close at hand with this Dominick's can cooler. The company began as a family business in 1918 and grew through neighborhood shops, large supermarkets, Omni Superstores, and Fresh Stores. Generations of local shoppers saw the name evolve through changing ownership before most locations closed in 2013. This can cooler is a thoughtful pick for former customers and collectors who remember the stores and their place in regional life.
Dominick DiMatteo, born in Sicily, founded Dominick's in 1918. The family opened a second store in 1934 and its first supermarket, a 14,000-square-foot location, in 1950. By 1968, the chain had 19 stores and was sold to Cleveland-based Fisher Foods, while the DiMatteos continued operating it. In 1970, Dominick's acquired 24 stores and a distribution center in Northlake, Illinois, from Kroger, bringing its total to 45. The family bought the chain back in 1981 and continued expanding. Dominick's launched its Omni Superstore format in 1987 and introduced its Fresh Store concept in 1993. After a sale to Yucaipa Companies, Safeway acquired the chain's 116 stores in 1998. Safeway later introduced its Lifestyle format, but the chain faced declining market share and store closures. Most locations closed on December 28, 2013; the last two, in Bannockburn and Westchester, Illinois, closed in January 2014. Roundy's acquired eleven stores in 2013, and Albertsons acquired Safeway in 2015. Dominick's operated in the Chicago area for 95 years.
