GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep a reminder of Dominick's distinctive Chicago-area story close at hand with this Metal Business Card Holder. Founded in 1918 by Dominick DiMatteo, the family chain expanded through new stores, its first supermarket in 1950, and a major acquisition of 24 stores in 1970. Later, Omni and Fresh Store formats marked new eras in its retail history. A thoughtful desk accessory for former employees, longtime shoppers, and collectors of regional supermarket history.
Dominick DiMatteo, born in Sicily, founded Dominick's in 1918. The family opened a second store in 1934 and its first supermarket, a 14,000-square-foot location, in 1950. By 1968, the chain had 19 stores and was sold to Cleveland-based Fisher Foods, while the DiMatteos continued operating it. In 1970, Dominick's acquired 24 stores and a distribution center in Northlake, Illinois, from Kroger, bringing its total to 45. The family bought the chain back in 1981 and continued expanding. Dominick's launched its Omni Superstore format in 1987 and introduced its Fresh Store concept in 1993. After a sale to Yucaipa Companies, Safeway acquired the chain's 116 stores in 1998. Safeway later introduced its Lifestyle format, but the chain faced declining market share and store closures. Most locations closed on December 28, 2013; the last two, in Bannockburn and Westchester, Illinois, closed in January 2014. Roundy's acquired eleven stores in 2013, and Albertsons acquired Safeway in 2015. Dominick's operated in the Chicago area for 95 years.
