Keep cards close with a tribute to a defining name in Puerto Rico’s retail story. Founded in Arecibo in 1939, Velasco Alonso expanded to San Juan and then to communities across the island. The business became es de Velasco, Inc. in 1972, reflecting a family-led chapter in its growth. This business card holder connects an everyday desk accessory with memories of familiar stores, changing neighborhoods, and a company that remained part of island commerce for generations.

Es de Velasco, commonly known as Velasco, grew from Domingo Velasco Alonso’s early commercial ventures in Puerto Rico. After arriving in 1905, he worked in Ponce and then Arecibo, where he partnered with Antonio Aguirre to establish El Cacique in 1917. In 1939, Velasco founded Velasco Alonso in Arecibo; it was described as the island’s largest department store outside San Juan. The business expanded to San Juan in 1952, followed by stores in Manatí and Río Piedras, and later locations across the island. In 1963, the company reported ten stores and about 200 employees. A Plaza Las Américas store opened in 1968, and in 1972 the stores were incorporated under the name es de Velasco, Inc., led by Velasco’s children and grandchildren. The chain also operated B&B (Bonito y Barato) and Almacenes Tan Tan through Velasco Alonso, Inc. After decades competing with González Padín, Velasco was acquired by that company in December 1991. González Padín announced liquidation of its stores in 1995, and the Velasco chain closed by December of that year.
