Bring a piece of Columbus retail history into your everyday wardrobe with this F&R Lazarus & Company Cotton Polo Shirt. Simon Lazarus began with a one-room men’s clothing store in 1851, and by 1870 the family business had grown into a broader merchandise house. The Lazarus name remained familiar through decades of regional growth and changing department store partnerships. For longtime shoppers and collectors, this polo honors a local name woven into the story of American retail.
Simon Lazarus opened a one-room men’s clothing store in downtown Columbus, Ohio, in 1851. By 1870, the family business had expanded from uniforms and ready-made clothing to a complete line of merchandise. The company acquired Cincinnati’s John Shillito Company in 1928 and became one of the four founding partners of Federated Department Stores in 1929. It later expanded beyond central Ohio, reaching Indianapolis in 1973 and Huntington, West Virginia, in 1981. In 1986, Lazarus merged with Shillito–Rike’s, and in 1987 Federated incorporated the William H. Block Company and Herpolsheimer’s into the Lazarus division. Federated integrated Lazarus with Rich’s and Goldsmith’s in 1995 while keeping the local name. In 2003, stores adopted the Lazarus–Macy’s name; in 2005, they were fully converted to Macy’s, ending the Lazarus nameplate. The former Lazarus stores later moved among Macy’s regional divisions, joining Macy’s Central in 2008.
