GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Celebrate the story behind a name once found on busy shopping streets with this F. W. Woolworth Company hoodie / sweatshirt. From a successful Lancaster store in 1879, Woolworth grew into a major chain built around the five-and-ten-cent format and customer choice. Its history spans international expansion, discount retail, and a transition from department stores toward sporting goods. The brand also connects to wider conversations about changing communities and civil rights history. A meaningful everyday layer for collectors and fans of historic retail.
Founded by Frank Winfield Woolworth, the company opened its first five-cent store in Utica, New York, on February 22, 1879; it closed after three months. Woolworth opened a successful store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on June 21, 1879, and later brought his brother Charles into the business. The chain developed the five-and-ten-cent format, selling general merchandise at fixed low prices and letting customers select goods themselves. In 1912, 596 affiliated stores merged as the F. W. Woolworth Company. It expanded into the United Kingdom in 1909, Ireland in 1914, Germany in 1927, and Mexico in 1956. The company added Woolco discount stores in 1962 and acquired Kinney Shoe Corporation in 1963; Kinney led to Foot Locker in 1974. Woolworth’s United Kingdom division was divested in 1982. In July 1997, the last U.S. Woolworth department stores closed. The company adopted the name Venator Group in 1998, then became Foot Locker, Inc. in 2001, continuing the original company’s legal corporate history while focusing on sporting goods.
