GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Remember a defining name in St. Louis shopping with this Famous-Barr Hoodie / Sweatshirt. Famous-Barr began with the local business roots of Motte’s in 1874 and was formed in 1911 when David May combined the Famous store with William Barr Dry Goods Co. Its downtown presence and branches across the region made the name part of generations of shopping memories. This design offers a meaningful connection for department-store collectors, former customers, and fans of Missouri retail history.
Famous-Barr began with Motte's, a St. Louis store founded in 1874 by Jesse W. Motte to sell boots and shoes. In 1876, Motte brought in supervisor Joseph Specht as a partner; they added clothing and moved to Franklin Street, where the business became known as Famous, Motte & Specht and the Famous Clothing Company. Retailer David May acquired the Famous Clothing Store in 1892 and later acquired William Barr Dry Goods Co. In 1911, he merged the businesses as Famous-Barr. The company opened a new downtown St. Louis department store in 1914, described in the article as the country's first air-conditioned department store. Its first branch opened in Clayton, Missouri, on October 8, 1948; a Northland Shopping Center branch followed in 1955. Famous-Barr took operational control of the L.S. Ayres division in Indiana in 1991 and added The Jones Store in Kansas City in 1998, while both chains kept their names. Parent company The May Department Stores Company was acquired by Federated on August 30, 2005. Famous-Barr entered Macy's Midwest on February 1, 2006, and its name was retired that September as most regional stores adopted the Macy's name. The downtown store and headquarters closed in summer 2013.
