Celebrate the reach and character of Federated Group with a travel mug inspired by a defining name in discount electronics retail. Wilfred Schwartz founded the company in Los Angeles in 1970, and its large-format stores helped shape the shopping landscape as the chain expanded into Texas and Arizona. By 1987 it had grown to 67 stores, supported by memorable television advertising featuring Fred R. Rated. This piece brings that California-born retail story into a collection of everyday keepsakes and brand memorabilia.

Federated Group was an American consumer electronics retailer founded by Wilfred Schwartz in 1970. Schwartz began the business after buying a 25,000-square-foot warehouse in Los Angeles and converting part of it into a store. In 1976, the company closed two locations and built a 20,000-square-foot store in Westminster, California, described as a superstore because of its size. The chain later added stores and expanded rapidly after becoming publicly traded in 1984, including a major move into Texas. By December 1984 it operated 25 stores; by 1985, 40 stores across California, Texas, and Arizona. Its headquarters were in City of Commerce, California, and later Sunnyvale. Known for humorous television advertising featuring Shadoe Stevens as Fred R. Rated, Federated Group reached 67 stores by 1987, when it was the fourth-largest U.S. consumer electronics discounter. It was sold in 1987 for US$67.3 million. In 1989, 26 stores in Los Angeles and San Diego were sold to Silo; the remaining stores held liquidation sales and closed in 1990. The former Federated locations reopened under the Silo name that year. Silo later closed some of those stores in 1994 and shut all its locations after filing for bankruptcy in 1995.
