Celebrate the bold years of Federated Group with a bottle opener inspired by its place in American electronics retail. Founded in Los Angeles in 1970, the chain expanded from its California roots into Texas and reached 67 stores by 1987. Its Fred R. Rated television campaign gave the retailer a memorable personality, while later store changes marked the end of an era. This keepsake brings that story to a home bar, collection, or gathering with fellow fans of retail history.

Federated Group was an American consumer electronics retailer founded by Wilfred Schwartz in 1970. Schwartz began the business after buying a 25,000-square-foot warehouse in Los Angeles and converting part of it into a store. In 1976, the company closed two locations and built a 20,000-square-foot store in Westminster, California, described as a superstore because of its size. The chain later added stores and expanded rapidly after becoming publicly traded in 1984, including a major move into Texas. By December 1984 it operated 25 stores; by 1985, 40 stores across California, Texas, and Arizona. Its headquarters were in City of Commerce, California, and later Sunnyvale. Known for humorous television advertising featuring Shadoe Stevens as Fred R. Rated, Federated Group reached 67 stores by 1987, when it was the fourth-largest U.S. consumer electronics discounter. It was sold in 1987 for US$67.3 million. In 1989, 26 stores in Los Angeles and San Diego were sold to Silo; the remaining stores held liquidation sales and closed in 1990. The former Federated locations reopened under the Silo name that year. Silo later closed some of those stores in 1994 and shut all its locations after filing for bankruptcy in 1995.

This slim, all-metal bottle opener feels like the trusted tool you reach for when friends gather and stories start. Forged from heavy-duty stainless steel, it slides into a pocket or bartending apron without bulk, then delivers confident leverage when a cold drink needs freeing. The flat surface accepts crisp laser engraving, so names, dates, or logos stay sharp through years of use. Use it behind the home bar, at backyard tailgates, or hand one to each member of your wedding party — it’s built to take commercial-level wear while still looking clean and refined.
